Excerpt

I pull Zig inside the Hotel Sacher Confectionery shop, famous for its traditional Sacher torte. Immediately, I’m blasted by the sight of dark chocolate cake and the scent of freshly brewed Viennese coffee, which reminds me of Sunday morning brunch at my house. My stomach grumbles mercilessly.

“Feed that beast in there before it devours us all.” Zig jabs a finger at my belly.

I laugh, and go back to ogling the cakes behind the glass display, picturing Anton smiling and gulping down the dark chocolate cake, apricot jam smeared on his lips. I dig out my savings, hand them to the lady behind the counter, and point at the smallest of the Sacher tortes. A few minutes later, Zig and I exit the shop and join the stream of pedestrians, strolling in and out of shops with bags in hand.

At the corner of Kärntner Strasse and Opernring, we stop to wait for the lights to change. A tram zips by. My gaze automatically drifts to the Vienna State Opera House. This is where magic happens.

When I was thirteen, our class visited the Opera House on an excursion. I remember walking through arched doorways and carpeted hallways, promising myself over and over that one day, this will be my dream.

Funny how life changes, twisting and turning dreams inside out, wringing them dry.

My stomach twists at the memory. I need to get out of here. Fast. I blink quickly, averting my gaze from Zig. Him seeing my face right now is the last thing I want.

“So what do you say?” he asks, oblivious to my current state. The light changes, and we join the crowd of people crossing the street. “Join me?” I give him a sidelong glance. “Do you trust me?” he asks when I don’t answer his questions.

“Would a deer trust a leopard to a cuddle?” I say, eyebrows raised.

He narrows his eyes. “Which one am I? The leopard or the deer?”

“Do you trust me?”

He doesn’t miss a beat. “Completely.”

I miss two beats. “Why? You hardly know me.”

“I just do. Come on, an hour of pure fun won’t kill you.”

I sigh. “Maybe later.” His shoulders sag. “Would you like to join me?”

His eyes light up, giving him a boyish look. “Never thought you’d ask.” He takes my hand. In the next step, we shift to the hospital.

“You’re reckless, you know that?” I say, placing a hand on the door of room 112. “Don’t you care that people notice when you disappear right before their eyes?”

“They’ll have something to talk about.”

I shake my head. “You could at least let me practise my shifting skills.”

“Next time.”

“Be good.”

“Aren’t I always?” He grins.

“Do you even know the meaning of that word?”

He winks. “You’d be surprised.”

I roll my eyes and walk inside the room. “

A Minor Magic Blog Tour

                                                   A Minor Magic Blog Tour
                                                         Author: Justin Macumber

Title: A MINOR MAGIC

Author: Justin Macumber

Genre: Young Adult

Tour Host: Lady Amber's Tours

Synopsis -
Over the course of a single night, mystical fires tore through the sky and reduced most of Earth to ash. Ten years later magical fire burns again, but this time it’s in the hands of a young girl named Skylar. Exiled from her adoptive home, Skylar must now struggle through ruined lands and religious zealots who believe she’s an agent of the Devil. An even greater threat exists in the form of shadowy sorcerers from another world who covet her blood. Along her journey, she meets a motley band of outcasts who not only know the secret of what happened to Earth, but also of Skylar’s true origin. Will Skylar be able to accept this fantastical truth? But more importantly, can her powers and raging heart be tamed in time to stop those who once burned the world and now seek total domination?

Book excerpt -
Skylar's eyes filled with a flickering blue light as ghostly flames jetted from her palms, and her screams were lost over the roaring of the blaze. Instinctively, she shook her hands, slapped them against her legs, and then clapped them together to try and extinguish the fire. As her hands touched, the flames vanished. To her astonishment her skin wasn't burned. It wasn't even warm. Sadly, the same couldn't be said for Buster. The dog was a smoking ruin at her feet, one more pile of burnt remains in a world already covered in ash. Her heart broke as she stared down at him. Oh god, she thought. What's happened? What have I done?
"Oh my Lord, girl," a man said behind her. "What did you do?"
Skylar whirled around, her eyes widening in guilt even though she didn't understand what had happened, or how. "Henry, he jumped at me! I don't know why he did it, and I tried to stop him, but..." She fell silent, her thoughts too scrambled to know what more to say. Buster was a dog she'd loved and cared for ever since coming to live on the farm years ago, and without warning, he had attacked her. When she'd held her hands up to ward him off, blue fire had erupted from them and consumed him as though it was a living, ravenous thing. Nothing like that had ever happened to her before, and she couldn't rightly explain what she didn't understand.

Title: The Winemaker’s Dinner: Dessert (The Winemaker’s Dinner, #3)

Author: Dr. Ivan Rusilko

Publisher: Omnific Publishing

Genre: Erotic romance

Age Group: Adult

Expected release: April 30, 2013

Book Description:
Left on bended knee, with nothing but a ring in his hand and a gaping hole in his chest, Ivan Rusilko lost everything when Jaden Thorne said, “I can’t.”
Now, six months later and despite her endless attempts to reach him, finding forgiveness for Jaden’s indiscretion is last on his list of things to do. Dr. Ivan is married to his career now, and his professional success is taking him places he’s never been before. But even the glow of accomplishment can’t heal his devastated heart. Determined to recover, to move forward at any cost, he now finds moments of respite in distractions that leave him emotionally bankrupt. He’s empty, a shadow of his former vibrant, life-loving self. On the outside, he may seem to be the man he always was. But inside, a terrible desire threatens to rip him apart and ruin him forever.
Meanwhile Jaden is haunted by the memory of the moment she saw the light wither and die in Ivan’s eyes. She knows it died at her hand. After months of trying to explain herself, of begging for mercy, she takes herself back to Miami, back into Ivan’s path, for one last chance at redemption. Can she entice him back into her arms? Convince him to give her a second chance? She’s determined to do whatever it takes to find forgiveness—even if all that’s left is forgiving herself.
In this final book of The Winemaker’s Feast Trilogy, The Winemaker’s Dinner: Dessert, author Dr. Ivan Rusilko is writing solo, drawing freely on his own life and love experiences to craft a heartbreaking and wildly erotic tale about lost hope, desperation, contrition, and—if it’s possible—the quest for a perfect ending to a real-life love story. True to its title, Dessert serves readers an indulgent, decadent last course, rich with twists, turns, and tantalizing truths.

Love is beautiful, guys like this really do exist, and the power of real romance is something we can all believe in.

(A re-imagining of The Fallen Star told as a New Adult Paranormal)

For twenty-one year-old Gemma, life has never been normal. She knows nothing about her past and has been haunted by the same monsters in her nightmares for the last few months. Unemotional and numb to life, she feels disconnected from everyone. Until the very first day she cries. After that, nothing in her life is the same.
Her emotions slowly surface and she starts experiencing love, happiness, and anger, feelings she never knew existed. But they leave her confused and she doesn’t know whether to embrace them or run away from them.
Her life only gets more complicated when she meets Alex. Sexy, arrogant, and secretive, Alex can get under Gemma’s skin like no one can. Yet she’s drawn to him by an invisible connection she has no control over. She’s also seen him before. In her nightmares.
Every part of Gemma’s mind is screaming at her to stay away from Alex, but every other part of her is begging to get close to him. But the closer she gets, the more she realizes Alex knows more about her than he originally let on.
As secrets about her past unravel, Gemma’s life becomes threatened. She needs to figure out what’s going on, before she winds up dead. But the only person she can turn to for answers is the one person she isn’t sure she can trust.
Bio:
The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Jessica Sorensen, lives in the snowy mountains of Wyoming. When she's not writing, she spends her time reading and hanging out with her family.

Review:
First let me state that it is not necessary to have read The Fallen Star series as this book is a "re-imagining" of the original geared to a more adult audience. I have not yet read The Fallen Star series and I definitely do not feel as though I missed anything for not having read it prior to delving into Shattered Promises. That being said, allow me to move on to how I felt about the book...
My first impression of this story is that, to me at least, it is a very original concept. The idea of moving through life never connecting with other people fully or even being able to feel any type of apropriate human emotion drew me in immediately. How would a person cope being so separated from those around them? And more importantly for this story, how would a person cope when suddenly every emotion never felt before suddenly became extremely real with no explanation as to why?
I thoroughly enjoyed the author's telling of Gemma's story. The heroine of our story is easy to like and feel a certain level of empathy for. Although she makes some ill advised choices, given the magnitude of changes she is forced through in a short period of time I suppose it is not unexpected. Alex, our hero, is likeable at times and infuriating at others. His character made me smile and then made me want to throw my reader across the room in pure frustration. Gemma and Alex's story is a complex and complicated one that has a great deal more to be explored and I look forward to the ride.
I do hope the author expands on some of the things she introduced in this first installment of Gemma's story. I would really like to know what it was that prompted Gemma's feelings to surface as well as quite a few other questions (which I cannot say more on without giving away too much of the story!) that surfaced while reading.
On the whole this was a great read that I would highly recomend. I am anxiously awaiting the next book to find out where the author takes the tale next.

Interview With Jessica Sorensen
  1. First let me start off by asking you how you are? Hope you are well. I also want to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions.
You’re very welcome.
  1. What can you tell us of Shattered Promises without giving too much away?
Shattered Promises is a New Adult Paranormal book, and it’s actually a rewrite to one of my young adult paranormal books. It’s about Gemma who hasn’t been able to feel emotions for most of her life. When she suddenly starts experiencing things like happiness, sadness, and pain, she thinks she’s crazy. But then she meets Alex and realizes there’s so much more to her and life than she originally thought.
  1. Where did the idea for the story come from?
A dream I had. It started out just being about a girl who couldn’t feel emotion. The paranormal aspects were added later.
  1. Who/What inspired you to write it?
I’m not really sure what the exact inspiration was behind the concept of the story. I loved the idea of trying to write about a character that was learning about emotions. And the vampires, fey, and witches part came from my love for the paranormal.
  1. How long have you been writing?
Since I was a kid, but I mostly wrote short stories and poetry back then. I started writing novels about five years ago.
  1. Did you always know you wanted to be an author?
I’ve always loved to write, but I didn’t always want to be an author. I went through a lot of phases that included wanting to be a vet, lawyer, teacher, journalist.
  1. Is there anything you would like to say to your friends/family/fans reading this right now?
Hi! And thanks so much for all your support!
  1. Do you have any other works coming up and if so, what can you tell us about them?
The books I have schedule to release this year are The Forever of Ella and Micha, the follow up to The Secret of Ella and Micha, one of my new adult contemporary books. The Evanescence, the last book in the Fallen Souls series, which is one of my young adult series. And I’ll be release Fractured Souls, which is book two in the Shattered Promises Series. What inspires you to write and how do you push through writer's block?
  1. What inspires you to write and how do you push through writer's block?
    1. Music, life, something I’ve read, or seen on television—inspiration pretty much comes from anywhere.
As for writers block, if I find myself really struggling to get words down, I’ll usually take a fifteen-minute break to clear my head and usually I can jump right back into the story.
Are there any people you would like to specifically point out who have helped you in any way?
There are so many people that have helped me—family, friends, bloggers.

What does it mean for those she loves….and the rest of mankind?

Excerpts – 4 to Choose From:

1:

“This next one’s called ‘Killing Man’ by Jack Savoretti.” Darius put the mic back in its stand and the band began a slow, ominous rhythm that shushed the crowd. Darius’ eyes closed as he hung on to the mic like a lifeline.

Grace’s knees trembled. This guy was definitely a danger to the heart. Her mind shot off warning bells to leave. Now. She bit the inside of her cheek, ignoring it, and tightened her fingers around her knees. The melody swam over her, making her shiver. She took in a cursory breath, and struggled to take in another. She should get up now, walk away. But the first line chained her to her seat.

In the haunting timbre of his voice was an outpouring of emotion that completely captivated her heart. Everyone and everything fell away as she sat enslaved, caught up in every word he sang. The song was a crying out of his soul. She felt it as surely as she felt her own heartbeat.

2:

He turned and rested his shoulder against the door frame, staring deeply into her eyes. Even in the dim light, Grace could see the instant his gaze switched from playful to intense. Down there in the closed confines of the underground, it became more than just a stare. It seemed like the stare sucked the air right out of the hallway, because she suddenly couldn’t breathe. Her heart rate spiked simultaneously, making it that much harder to gasp for the depleted oxygen quietly. Grace took a step backward and her shoulder blades pressed into the wall. She held the bag against her chest, hoping to seem at ease, even though his gaze made her want to squirm.

Slowly, Quentin folded his arms over his chest as well and crossed one foot over the other, never taking his eyes from hers. A devilish grin turned the edges of his mouth up like horns, and she couldn’t take it anymore. “What?”

“Nothing,” he replied, turning his head and smirking at the wall. When he pushed himself away from the door frame, the hole-boring intensity was gone. “Relax.” Right, she sighed mentally.

3:

“It wasn’t your fault,” Quentin said softly as he came up behind her, touching her briefly on the shoulder before lowering himself to sit on the edge of the coffee table. He leaned toward her, resting his elbows on his knees as he stared into her eyes, his expression conveying his compassion.

Grace raised her tear-filled eyes. “It wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t in the car with them.” Tears spilled over her lower lids, blurring her view of Emily’s picture glowing from the cell phone she still gripped.

“Look at me.” Quentin lifted her face with a gentle finger. “It was my fault. It’s my job to keep you safe and I failed.”

She heard every word Quentin spoke, but couldn’t cling to them like he intended. Every one of her friends could have died—because of her, not him. Visions of caskets and grieving families had her pulse quickening. Worry festered in the center of her chest—circling and tearing at her until what rose forth was anger. With every beat of her heart, the anger pulsed stronger. No. In her head, she said it again. No. The word ricocheted like a war cry through her cerebral cortex until it owned her, heart and soul. Energy channeled through every inch of her body. A shiver chased behind it. Those she cared for and loved would not pay for what she was.

In that instant, Grace felt the power of her choice thunder through her like an electrical current. Just like Seth in the movie, she chose to be what she was meant to be, and not to shed what she originally thought was a burden. Newly determined, she leveled her gaze with Quentin’s.

“What do I need to do to make sure they never hurt anyone I love again?”

Quentin gazed back at her, his features rearranging themselves into an expression flat and cold—deadly. “You train and you fight back. You let me do my job. And we don’t let them win. Ever.

Resolve steeled her voice. “We won’t.”

4:

As they continued talking, electrically charged molecules cavorted between them, pulling their bodies closer together. Grace was hyperaware of the slight movement he made, and where his body touched hers with every word. Peeking at him from under her lashes, she licked her bottom lip and watched his hands as they moved absentmindedly on his knees, wondering what they’d feel like against her face, tangled in her hair. How would it feel to be wrapped in his arms, or to snuggle into the crook of his neck? How would his lips feel pressed against hers, or… Her head snapped down to peer in her cup. She wondered if something had been slipped into her drink. It looked empty, so she shook it for good measure. Yep, it was almost gone. Three down.

The phone in her pocket buzzed against both their legs. Her hands grabbed for it while she sent Darius an apologetic look. She felt like tossing the phone in the fire, but peeked at the backlit screen anyway.

Quentin: DON’T YOU THINK YOU’VE HAD ENOUGH?

With her iPhone cupped in both hands, she stared across the flames at the others sitting around, noticing Brian and Leah. No, she decided, shaking her head. She certainly didn’t think so.

Grace: Not at all!

Irritated he was playing Guardian/father again, she continued.

Grace: I have a DD if I can’t drive. A GA if im in dnger & a ST sittin b-side me.

She giggled a little at the last part. Darius sat silently next to her, minding his own business. Her phone buzzed again seconds later.

Quentin: What’s an ST?

Grace: A sure thing.

Quentin: NOT FUNNY.

Grace: Who said im kidding?
